Enduimet ? – Never heard of it !

Safari Guide

You may not even know of its existence, there are no signs or entrance fees, but the Enduimet WMA is a quiet success story in protecting the wildlife corridors of West Kilimanjaro, including the Kitenden Corridor, an elephant “highway” that stretches all the way to Kenya.

Founded in 2003 with nine villages, and nestled in the heart of the West Kilimanjaro Basin, the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in the Longido Conservation Area is still a hidden gem for safari tourists. The Enduimet WMA is less crowded compared to other national parks in Tanzania and allows guests to enjoy a quieter and more intimate experience with nature.

Enduimet WMA is an example of a community-based nature reserve where Maasai herders benefit from tourism and conservation initiatives. The area is managed by local communities, with a significant portion of the revenue going directly to support the Maasai communities. In doing so, you support sustainable and fair tourism that promotes the protection of the environment and the local population.

Freedom to explore

Due to its location near Mount Kilimanjaro, Enduimet WMA offers spectacular views of Africa’s highest mountain. Different landscapes with plains, hills and rivers make it a special place for nature and landscape lovers.

Elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions live in this area. Elephants, in particular, roam the area on their migrations between Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Amboseli National Parks in Kenya. This Garden of Eden is home to the largest elephants in East Africa.

In addition to wildlife viewing, guests can enjoy a different, more immersive experience of the area on guided hikes led by Maasai guides. During visits to Maasai villages, you will gain insights into their culture, lifestyle and traditions and add a special highlight to your safari.

The slogan of the area is very well chosen. The parking regulations and rules that exist in the national parks, for example no off-road driving, do not apply in the Enduimet. Would you like to see the giraffe from a different angle? Just drive around. Are you curious about what’s behind the bush? Just take a look.– You can get out of the car and explore the African wilderness in a way that is not possible in national parks.

Although you will (most likely) not encounter any of the big cats, there are some other special wildlife to spot: if you are lucky, you may see the gerenuk: a rare antelope with a long neck – also known as the giraffe antelope. You might also find the impressive kudus – with their pretty stripes and imposing horns. Giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, impalas, Grant & Thomsona coats and zebras are often spotted. There are also many interesting birds to discover.

Things to do in Enduimet

You need a bit of luck and clear skies, but the views of Kilimanjaro are incomparable. At the same time, you can admire Mount Meru and Longido.

Another interesting thing about the area is that you can make small stops at some cultural attractions. A traditional waterhole built by the Maasai and a meerschaum mine left behind by the Germans. Meerschaum is a mineral used for pipes – and is only found in Turkey and here in Tanzania. The sights are admittedly not particularly spectacular, but they are nice stops to stretch your legs. In short, Enduimet offers things you won’t find anywhere else in northern Tanzania and will make for a memorable addition to your classic safari.

Photo safaris

Photo safaris are the most widespread tourist activity in Enduimet, where tourists from different parts of the world come together to observe wild animals. Elephants, oryx antelopes, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, lions, buffaloes, leopards, elands, hyenas and other large African mammals can be easily seen in the WMA and Sinya, a private concession of about 600 square kilometres bordering Kenya in Amboseli National Park, which offers spectacular landscapes with stunning views of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Lengai and Ol Doinyo Orok.

Night Safaris

The night safari in the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a fascinating journey into the secrets of the night world. It offers a unique opportunity to observe the enchanting activities of the wild animals that come to life under the cover of darkness.
During the night game drive, you will get to know a completely different group of animals. Animals that retreat during the day come out of their hiding places. From shy predators such as lions and leopards to smaller animals such as genets, bush babies and owls, you’ll have the chance to see a range of wildlife in their natural habitat.

The spotlight becomes your window into the darkness. The guide’s skilful use of light reveals reflective eyes and unique behaviors that would otherwise remain hidden. The experience is as exciting as it is informative.
